Bidding Farewell to Marc Rosenstein

Who would believe it?

After 20 years in the job, Marc Rosenstein, general manager of the Galilee Foundation for Value Education, is leaving. Or, to give him his official title, Rabbi Doctor Marc Rosenstein.

The Galilee Foundation has been the home of Dugrinet since its establishment. Sometime back in 2007, we (Tali and Hedva) met with Marc at the offices of the foundation with a rough idea of creating a newspaper or website alternative to the local press in the Misgav region. We felt the regional press is weak journalistically in terms of the topics covered and the range of voices brought, and we wanted to make a change. It was important for us to build a format that would be in Hebrew and Arabic and also contain criticism.

Marc opened the gate wide for us, and asked, “Why Misgav, why not the whole Galilee? Hasn’t the time come to reach outside the borders of Misgav?” We accepted his opinion and set off. First, we worked through the foundation, the idea being that within two years, after becoming established, we would say thank you for the incubation period granted to us and burst onto the world as an independent organization.

Marc’s American inspiration took the form of the Huffington Post website, a popular site for a whole mass of writings. Meanwhile, you could say that over the years we realized that news is not our direction, and Dugrinet evolved into a large and significant community, with much action on the net and activities offline. But blogs and a variety of voices is the theme that we took very seriously.

Two years passed and Marc made us an offer we could not refuse: come join the foundation and become a part of us. Since then much water has run through many streams; Samah joined, Tali started work as an editor in place of Uri Sabah, who replaced Ella Margalit. Dugrinet continues to be in the field, with more and more activity beyond the website; and Marc, in his gentle way, asks: so where are the paid advertisements? (Really, where are they?)

Marc has a special way of empowering his staff. The feeling is that he always trusts us, appreciates our thinking and is proud of our actions. He comes to every event and tour that he can, stands up to each controversial subject and expresses his opinion, and does not forget to congratulate. He spreads the word about us everywhere and especially gives us his support: providing backing for content, backing for events, backing for creativity… so much that sometimes we wonder how he manages not to hurt his back!

On his departure we hope that on his new path he will look after himself by disengaging when required, and he should know that he is always welcome to visit.

And to Nir Topper, the new CEO of the foundation, we hope he will continue to promote the work of the foundation and encourage its openness, which have allowed Dugrinet to become what it is.

This is an opportunity to invite all supporters of Dugrinet to a big farewell event planned for the 13th of November in Karmiel. It will be an especially fun event, where the Galilee Circus and friends from the circus world will perform.

Circus Meet - an article by Marc Rosenstein on the visit of a Dutch circus to the Galilee Circus.

See here for information and the opportunity to purchase tickets. As a donation, you can buy tickets for children who cannot afford them (the foundation will pass on any available tickets to those who can use them).

The attached video, photographed by Eitan Vetzler, contains more information about the circus including an interview with Marc.

Everyone is invited! We will be there and it will be joyous!
